Diamond stone was a blessing to work with. Communication was easy, everyone was punctual and easy to work with. They helped us pick a turf that would better suit our needs and were done with the work in 2 days. Everything looks amazing and I will absolutely be using them for future projects.

We were looking for a landscape design and construction service for the backyard of our new home in Phoenix. My wife found Diamond Stone & Synthetic Grass online, with good reviews, so we decided to get a quote from them. The project manager, DANIEL, responded and did the measurement for our backyard. He explained to us the materials and the labors. And the most importantly, the grading to direct water out of the backyard and away from the foundation of the house. In the same afternoon, he sent us the quote, the detail measurement, and the selections of materials. The quote is much better than what we expected, so we decided to hire them for this project. While the construction is ongoing, Daniel always kept us updated. We asked a lot of questions during the process, to prevent mistakes caused by misunderstanding. Daniel and his team always responded in a timely manner. The whole team is knowledgeable, friendly, and patient. They took care of the questions and issues we brought up, and the project ends up awesome. When I saw the outcome, I have nothing else to say but WOW. There was a tiny hiccough that the paver was too close to the gate, causing it hard to close. Once we brought it to Daniel's attention, his team showed up in two days and fixed it. How can we not appreciate a team taking care of problems so quickly? We are very happy that we chose DSSG to do our backyard.

Extremely satisfied with diamond stone. Daniel was very friendly and helpful during the consultation. I met with so many different companies, but knew almost immediately I’d go with them because of how Daniel communicated and made me feel confident in their work. The crew was very quick and professional as well. We got new turf installed and it looks amazing! Even after it was done, they have been communicating with me all the way. Great service and reasonable prices.

The most important things to verify before hiring a backyard renovation contractor in Phoenix are an active ROC (Registrar of Contractors) license number, proof of bonding and insurance, a detailed itemized quote (not a vague lump sum), and references or examples from projects similar in scope to yours. Skipping any of these is where most bad renovation experiences start.

Arizona’s Registrar of Contractors requires licensing for most landscaping and construction work, and checking a contractor’s license status takes about two minutes on the ROC’s website — yet it’s one of the most commonly skipped steps by homeowners moving quickly to get a project started.

Step 1: Verify Licensing, Bonding, and Insurance

Every legitimate contractor should be able to provide their ROC license number without hesitation, and you can verify it directly at ROC.gov. Bonding protects you financially if work isn’t completed as agreed; insurance protects you if something goes wrong on your property during the project. A contractor unwilling or unable to provide these isn’t one to work with, regardless of how good their pricing looks.

Step 2: Get an Itemized Quote, Not a Lump Sum

A quote that just says “backyard renovation — $35,000” tells you almost nothing. A proper quote breaks down material costs, labor, base depth and specifications for hardscape, permit handling, and a payment schedule tied to project phases. Itemized quotes are also what let you accurately compare multiple contractors against each other — lump sums make comparison shopping nearly impossible.

Step 3: Ask About Base Work and Materials Specifically

For any hardscape (pavers, patios, driveways), ask specifically what base depth and material they use and how they handle drainage. This is the part of the job that’s invisible once finished but determines whether the project holds up for decades or needs repair within a few years. A contractor who can answer this confidently and specifically is a good sign; vague answers are a red flag.

Step 4: Ask How Multiple Services Are Coordinated

If your project combines turf, hardscape, a shade structure, and possibly an outdoor kitchen, ask whether one team manages the whole project or whether different pieces get subcontracted separately. A single point of contact across services generally means better coordination, fewer scheduling conflicts, and a more cohesive final result.

Step 5: Check References and Past Work

Ask for examples of completed projects similar in scope to yours, not just a general portfolio. A contractor with strong experience in Arizona-specific challenges — heat, monsoon drainage, HOA requirements — will have specific, confident answers about how they handle each.

Red Flags to Watch For

  • Reluctance to provide a license number or proof of insurance
  • Quotes significantly lower than others with no clear explanation why
  • Pressure to sign quickly or pay a large deposit upfront before any details are finalized
  • Vague answers about base depth, drainage, or material specifications
  • No clear payment schedule tied to project milestones

Questions to Ask Before Signing

  • What is your ROC license number, and can I verify your bonding and insurance?
  • Can you provide an itemized quote broken down by material and labor?
  • What base depth and materials do you use for hardscape specifically?
  • Who handles permitting, and is that included in your quote?
  • What does your payment schedule look like across the project?
  • Do you have examples of completed projects similar in scope to mine?

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I verify a contractor’s license in Arizona? You can search any contractor’s license number directly on the Arizona Registrar of Contractors website (ROC.gov) to confirm it’s active and in good standing.

Should I always choose the lowest quote? Not necessarily — a significantly lower quote than others often means shortcuts on base depth, material quality, or scope that aren’t obvious until problems appear later. Compare itemized quotes, not just bottom-line numbers.

Is it better to hire one contractor for a full renovation or separate contractors for each piece? For multi-service projects (turf, hardscape, structures), a single full-service contractor generally coordinates the work more efficiently and produces a more cohesive result than managing multiple separate contractors yourself.

What should be included in a backyard renovation contract? An itemized breakdown of materials and labor, specific base/installation specifications for hardscape, a payment schedule tied to project phases, timeline expectations, and confirmation of who handles any required permits.

How many quotes should I get before choosing a contractor? Most homeowners get 2–3 itemized quotes to compare pricing, scope, and how thoroughly each contractor answers questions about materials and process.
