We were looking for a landscape design and construction service for the backyard of our new home in Phoenix. My wife found Diamond Stone & Synthetic Grass online, with good reviews, so we decided to get a quote from them. The project manager, DANIEL, responded and did the measurement for our backyard. He explained to us the materials and the labors. And the most importantly, the grading to direct water out of the backyard and away from the foundation of the house. In the same afternoon, he sent us the quote, the detail measurement, and the selections of materials. The quote is much better than what we expected, so we decided to hire them for this project. While the construction is ongoing, Daniel always kept us updated. We asked a lot of questions during the process, to prevent mistakes caused by misunderstanding. Daniel and his team always responded in a timely manner. The whole team is knowledgeable, friendly, and patient. They took care of the questions and issues we brought up, and the project ends up awesome. When I saw the outcome, I have nothing else to say but WOW. There was a tiny hiccough that the paver was too close to the gate, causing it hard to close. Once we brought it to Daniel's attention, his team showed up in two days and fixed it. How can we not appreciate a team taking care of problems so quickly? We are very happy that we chose DSSG to do our backyard.

Extremely satisfied with diamond stone. Daniel was very friendly and helpful during the consultation. I met with so many different companies, but knew almost immediately I’d go with them because of how Daniel communicated and made me feel confident in their work. The crew was very quick and professional as well. We got new turf installed and it looks amazing! Even after it was done, they have been communicating with me all the way. Great service and reasonable prices.

If you’re comparing decorative rock options for a Phoenix yard, here’s the short version: expect to pay $45–$120 per cubic yard delivered (or roughly $3–$8 per square foot installed with fabric and edging), choose rock size and color based on how much heat reflection and foot traffic the area gets, and always pair it with proper weed barrier and edging — most “my rock yard looks bad two years later” complaints trace back to skipping those two steps. Here’s what to actually consider before you order a truckload.

Decorative rock has become the default ground cover for Phoenix yards for one simple reason: it doesn’t die in July. Where grass burns out and mulch breaks down under UV exposure, rock stays put, doesn’t need irrigation, and actually gets more popular every year as Valley cities push water-conservation rebates. But “decorative rock” covers a wide range of products with very different price points, performance, and looks — picking the wrong one is an expensive mistake to walk back.

Types of Decorative Rock Used in Phoenix Landscaping

Decomposed Granite (DG) The most common ground cover in the Valley. Small, compact particles that pack down into a firm, walkable surface — ideal for pathways, tree rings, and large open areas. Comes in tan, gold, and brown tones that blend with most home exteriors.

River Rock Smooth, rounded stones typically 1″–3″ in size, used around drainage areas, dry creek beds, and as an accent border. Doesn’t compact like DG, so it’s better for decorative zones than high-traffic paths.

Crushed/Rip Rap Rock Larger, angular rock (often 3″–8″+) used for slope stabilization, drainage channels, and low-maintenance perimeter zones. The go-to choice for large side yards or areas prone to water runoff during monsoon season.

Screened Rock / Gold Fines A finer, more uniform rock than standard DG, often used in more polished front-yard designs where a cleaner, more manicured look is the goal.

What Does Decorative Rock Cost in Phoenix?

Pricing depends on rock type, size of area, and whether fabric/edging is included:

Rock TypeTypical Cost (Installed)
Decomposed granite (DG)$3 – $5 per sq ft
River rock$4 – $7 per sq ft
Crushed/rip rap rock$3 – $6 per sq ft
Screened/gold fines$4 – $8 per sq ft

For reference, a typical 1,000 sq ft front and side yard runs roughly $3,500–$6,500 installed, including fabric and steel or paver edging. Delivery-only pricing (no install) generally runs $45–$120 per cubic yard depending on rock type and how far it has to travel.

The Two Steps Most DIY Rock Jobs Skip (And Why It Shows in 2 Years)

The difference between a rock yard that still looks sharp in five years and one that looks patchy and weedy in eighteen months almost always comes down to:

  1. Commercial-grade weed fabric underneath — cheap fabric breaks down under UV exposure and Phoenix heat within a couple of years, letting weeds punch through.
  2. Steel, paver, or concrete edging — without a hard edge, rock migrates into lawns, planting beds, and walkways every time it rains or gets blown by wind, and the clean line that makes a rock yard look intentional disappears fast.

This is one of the most common reasons homeowners end up calling a professional landscaping team to redo a rock yard that was installed without either of these.

Decorative Rock and Water Conservation in Phoenix

Rock landscaping isn’t just low-maintenance — it’s one of the most effective water-saving swaps a Phoenix homeowner can make. Replacing turf or high-water plantings with rock and drought-tolerant landscaping can cut outdoor water use significantly, which is why several Valley cities offer rebate programs for xeriscape conversions. If you’re pairing rock with synthetic grass instead of natural turf, the water savings compound further — you get the green without the irrigation bill.

Rock, Turf, or Both? How to Decide

Most Phoenix backyards end up using a mix, not just one material:

  • Rock alone works well for side yards, drainage zones, and low-traffic front yards where the goal is purely low-maintenance curb appeal.
  • Synthetic turf makes more sense for backyard play areas, pet zones, and anywhere you want the look and feel of grass without the water bill.
  • Rock + turf combined is the most common request we get — rock borders and pathways framing a turf lawn gives you contrast, defined zones, and the lowest possible maintenance across the whole yard.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much decorative rock do I need for my yard? As a rule of thumb, one cubic yard of rock covers about 100–150 square feet at a standard 2–3 inch depth. A typical 1,000 sq ft area needs roughly 7–10 cubic yards.

What’s the best decorative rock for a Phoenix front yard? Decomposed granite is the most popular choice for front yards because it compacts into a clean, walkable surface and comes in tones that complement most stucco and brick exteriors. Screened/gold fines are a step up for a more manicured look.

Does decorative rock make my yard hotter? Lighter-colored rock (tan, gold) reflects more heat than it absorbs compared to dark mulch or bare dirt, but any hardscape near seating areas benefits from shade. This is why rock and turf are so often paired with a pergola or patio cover nearby.

How often does decorative rock need to be replaced or topped off? With proper fabric and edging, decorative rock rarely needs full replacement — expect to top off low spots or wind-blown areas every few years rather than redoing the whole yard.

Can I install decorative rock myself, or should I hire a professional? Small accent areas are DIY-friendly, but full-yard installs benefit from professional grading (to direct water away from your foundation), commercial-grade fabric, and proper edging — the three things that determine whether the job still looks good in five years.
