It’s the decision almost every Phoenix homeowner faces when they redo a patio, walkway, pool deck, or driveway: pavers or poured concrete?
Both work. Both are everywhere in the Valley. But they behave very differently over a decade of Arizona sun, monsoon storms, and soil movement — and the cheaper option upfront is not always the cheaper option in the end. Here’s an honest comparison, including the parts installers don’t always volunteer.
The Short Version
Concrete costs less upfront and goes in fast. Pavers cost more initially but resist cracking, are far easier to repair, and generally add more to resale. For a lot of Phoenix homeowners, pavers are the better long-term value — but not for every project or every budget. The details below tell you which camp yours falls into.
Upfront Cost
There’s no getting around it: poured concrete is cheaper to install than pavers. It’s a faster process with lower material and labor costs, and for a large flat area on a tight budget, that difference is real.
Pavers cost more per square foot because you’re paying for individual manufactured units and the more labor-intensive installation — excavation, a compacted base, sand setting, laying each unit, and edge restraint.
If the entire decision came down to the first invoice, concrete would win every time. It doesn’t, which is why this article keeps going.
Cracking — Arizona’s Deciding Factor
This is where the two part ways, and it matters more in Arizona than in milder climates.
Concrete cracks. Not always, not immediately, but it’s the nature of a large rigid slab. Our extreme heat expands it, cooler nights contract it, monsoon water erodes the base beneath it, and Arizona’s soil movement shifts it. Control joints manage where it cracks, but they don’t prevent it. Most Valley homeowners with a concrete slab more than a few years old can point to a crack.
Pavers don’t crack the way slabs do, because they aren’t one rigid piece. The sand-set joints between them flex with ground movement and temperature swings, absorbing stress that would fracture a slab. Individual pavers are also manufactured under pressure to be denser and stronger than typical poured concrete.
In a climate that actively works to crack hardscape, a system built to flex has a structural advantage.
Repairs
When concrete cracks or a section sinks, your options are limited and ugly: patch it (visible and rarely a good color match), grind it, or cut out and re-pour whole sections (expensive, and the new concrete won’t match the aged slab).
When a paver is damaged or a section settles after an unusually severe storm, you lift the affected pavers, correct the base underneath, and reset the same pavers. No demolition, no color mismatch, no seam. If you keep a few spares from the original install, even a cracked individual paver becomes a ten-minute swap.
Over a 15–20 year lifespan in Arizona, this repair difference is one of the biggest hidden cost gaps between the two.
Heat
A fair Phoenix question: which one is cooler underfoot?
Both get hot in direct sun — this is the desert. But color and material matter more than concrete-vs-paver as a category. Lighter-colored surfaces stay cooler than dark ones, and pavers come in a huge range of colors and finishes, including light tones and textured surfaces that help. There are also specific paver products designed to reduce surface temperature.
The practical takeaway: if a cooler surface matters (around a pool, especially), you have more tools to get there with pavers, but smart color choice matters either way. And shade — from a pergola or the house — beats any material choice for comfort.
Appearance and Resale
Concrete is a large uniform surface. It can be dressed up — stamped, stained, colored, scored — but stamped concrete adds cost and, when it cracks, the crack runs straight through the decorative pattern.
Pavers offer more design range out of the box: colors, shapes, laying patterns, borders, and the ability to define spaces and curves. That visual quality is why pavers are often associated with higher-end outdoor spaces — and why they tend to contribute more to home value and curb appeal, which matters in a competitive Phoenix market.
Maintenance
Concrete is low-maintenance day to day; the maintenance event is dealing with cracks when they come. Sealing helps it resist staining.
Pavers ask for a little routine attention — occasional weed control in the joints (minimized by polymeric sand and proper installation), periodic re-sanding of joints, and resealing to keep color rich. In exchange, the “big” maintenance event (a cracked slab) essentially doesn’t happen.
Neither is high-maintenance. They just fail differently — concrete with occasional big problems, pavers with minor routine upkeep.
So Which Should You Choose?
Concrete makes sense when: the budget is the hard constraint, the area is large and simple, and you accept that cracking is likely over time.
Pavers make sense when: you’re staying in the home long-term, you want the lowest lifetime cost and easiest repairs, appearance and resale matter, or the project is a focal point like a patio, pool deck, or front entry.
